I made my test version using Sundara FSM in Graphite (grey) and a limited edition blue/green/grey Music of the Night. This silk blend is a dream to work with and very soft to wear.
I have two new patterns to share with you today. Both are great for spring knitting.

Yahara Shawl
This shawl is knit using two skeins of sport weight yarn. I love the size and shape of the shawl; it is very wearable in a variety of ways: as a scarf, with a pin, or as a wrap. I lightly blocked mine and arranged the ripples into shape instead of pinning them. I used The Plucky Knitter Traveler Sport in High Cotton and Vignette. Love this yarn! So snuggly.

Mini Roni Hat
This is the fingering/sock weight version of my Rib-a-roni and Bulky Roni hats. It is great for spring and fall. I used about half a skein on the large, so it would be a great scrap buster if you wanted to add a stripe or two. The pattern is written with 10 sizes.
I think the weather is a bit confused. Today is the first full day of spring and I was greeted by 0 degrees wind chill. Yikes! So, another Aran weight hat is in order. I'm in love with Aran weight hats, especially if they are in The Plucky Knitter's Primo Aran. This yarn is so lovely that I didn't want to let the leftovers from my Mendota and Monona hats go to waste. So, the Kegonsa Hat was born. Easy two stripe pattern with a bit of texture to give it some complexity. And, the squish factor is pretty awesome. I also wrote the pattern to be used with Worsted weight yarns. Or, you could do a single color (just ignore the directions to switch colors in the pattern).

Not only is the yarn wonderful, but I'm really liking the relaxed fit of the hat. Not too slouchy and not fitted like a beanie. Just right. Here's the neutral (Aran) version:

As you can see, I like to match my hat with my snowshoes. :)

I even made it in some highly contrasting yarns (purple and berry pink worsted) and it looks pretty cute.

Pattern is now available in my Windy Prairie Designs shop on Ravelry and will be available in my Etsy shop as well.

Winter is still hanging on around here, so a cozy hat or two is still needed. Aran weight yarn is a perfect match for the weather.

Monona Hat is a beanie-style hat with a stretchy rib pattern that gives a great fit.

Both hats were knit in Aran weight yarn, which means they have about 175-200 yards/100g. They would look very nice in either a solid or semi-solid yarn. Perfect for a subtle hand-dyed yarn.
I cut six simple blocks (6x11") from each of 13 FQs. I decided to leave out the cute cheater FQ and use it for something else. The backing is a simple green dot and the binding is Kona Cotton in pink. The quilt is 63x72". Amazingly, I was able to quilt this on my Singer Featherweight 221. I sewed down either side of the seams about 1/4". I hope that this is enough; I'm a bit of worried that I needed to do a line down the center of each block. I'll have an expert quilter (aka, my mom) look at it and see what she thinks. I think it turned out great.

Now that the weather is getting chilly, the finished "Living Room" quilt is getting nightly use during reading time. I have fabric to make another and am still waiting on the Mastermind quilt (still at the quilter's).

Here's the fabric for the next quilt. It is Rocket Scientist and fits so well with our family. I'm thinking of adding in some solids (red, blue, green). I still need to figure out what to do with it. I was thinking of pluses or something other than blocks, but can't decide. The text is really cute, and the numbers are a countdown.
On the knitting front, I have finished two sweaters: Plucky Primo and Aran Cashmere. So happy to be knitting more productively again. I still need to finish up 3.5 skeins of Sundara before the end of the year for a KAL.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2376289184606478428.post-73044270287298127292012-09-23T22:03:00.000-05:002012-09-23T22:03:30.167-05:00Sewing up a stormLots of new FOs, of the fabric nature...
This was hand-quilted weeks ago, but I had to wait to get a walking foot to finish it. The binding on this was much easier to sew on, now that I have a bit of experience and the correct tools to work with. Finished size 68"x84", 9/23/2012.

I actually finished another quilt top using the Mastermind fabric using a modified Turning 20 pattern (9/14/2012). I forgot to take a picture of it when it was done, but here's a bit of in-progress.

Currently, the quilt is at the long-arm quilter's house. I should have it back in November. I hope it looks great. The pattern was pretty simple and hope that the fancy quilting will spice it up a bit.

I also cut out the pieces for my Fox Hollow Quilt and picked out the binding (pink), backing (sage dots), and batting (warm & white) this past weekend. Trying to maximize my FQs. I decided to use the 13 (4 solid, 9 pattern) to make a simple brick pattern. Each piece is 6x11. I prewashed my fabrics. There was a lot of white and red in a few of the pieces and I wanted to see if any thing would run (it didn't). I'm saving the cute "cheater" FQ for another project. That pattern wasn't squared up on the fabric and it annoys me to have warped lines on an angular project. This quilt will be a bit smaller than twin size. I'm thinking I'll either hand-quilt again or have it machine quilted.

Once this quilt is done, I am planning on starting either a king-size (probably in blues) or a queen-size picnic quilt (in reds, greys/blacks, or greens.). I think that will be my 8th quilt (4 baby size, 3 twin). I love the larger sizes. They seem much more useful, but I'm going to have to figure out the quilting part (i.e. long-arm or buy a machine that I can use for free motion). I don't know if I can hand-quilt those big sizes. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2376289184606478428.post-21197231902649080812012-09-06T17:20:00.001-05:002012-10-17T09:52:50.781-05:00More Fabric, more quilting, and sock knittingI've been working on hand quilting my "Living room" quilt for the past two weeks. I decided to do diagonal lines on the blue and green blocks and squares in the browns/tans/striped blocks. That took me about a week. I was stumped about the border and then settle on two simple straight rows of hand quilting. The border will be 6" and I did the lines at 2 & 4" from the edge. I like how it looks and was simple to do. Next up: trim the extra backing fabric and batting, sew on the binding, and then decide on whether to sew it down by hand or machine.

I've done a bit of fabric purchasing, for future quilts.
Mastermind Fat Quarters (Connecting Threads) for a quilt and 3 pillowcases
I love this so much because I made it with my kids. They gave me a list of things they like and I made a text fabric with it. I wish I would have set the block differently, but ended up with 3 full blocks and one that was split (top and bottom halves). I think I'll make each of them something using a block of the fabric

I have been making socks lately, but little progress on the sweater front. Still pretty warm here and not great weather for inspiring sweater making. It will be cold soon, and hope the mood will return then.
Last fall, I got back into spinning. Here's a favorite from Unwind Yarn Company (Falkland)
I knit with my handspun, which was wonderful. These are some socks from FatCat SW Merino:

And this summer, I got bitten by the sewing and quilting bugs. Crazy. When I was in high school, I sewed a lot. Lots of clothes, even a swim suit! Then I sort of stopped sewing during college (mostly) and didn't pick it up until I was pregnant 10+ years ago. Unfortunately, I bought a terrible machine that ruined sewing for me. It was a pain to use and made ever sewing project frustrating. So, this summer, I sold it and went back to an old favorite of mine. My mom bought a Singer Featherweight 221 in the late 1950's and it is now the machine I've been using. It is not big, but I love it so and enjoy working on it.

Here's what I have made so far:
a baby quilt out of a "Ten Little Things" charm pack.

I've been making a twin size quilt for our living room. Colors chosen by my 5 year old. That may sound scary, but he actually has a pretty good eye for color. I'm hand quilting it, but here's a QIP picture.

I made a pair of gift project bags from this tutorial. They are on their way to two knitters.

I also have started making cute hexagons from my tiny scraps collection. I made a needle book out of felt and 1.5" hexagons from a tutorial.

There is also a bunch of fabric on the way from Connecting Threads. They have a techie line of fabric and one with books. Pretty much sums up our family in a nutshell. Pictures of that when they arrive.

I took a dye class as well. Fun!

Hopefully I'll be able to use the blog again more frequently. I think I started it when my oldest started kindergarten. Next week my youngest will be going to kindergarten. Time really flies!

I think I've realize this past summer that I want to be more "well rounded" in my crafting. I forgot how much I enjoyed sewing and that I'm actually pretty good at it. A bit rusty, but I know what I'm doing at that machine. Same for spinning. I spun some fiber 8 years ago, then finished it up last year. It was nearly an exact match for what I made before. Consistency. I sort of went crazy with my yarn purchases when I first was introduced to hand-dyed yarns and collected quite a stash. Now, I'm trying to avoid that pitfall with fabric purchases. I understand a need for fabric on hand, but also know that it is not good just to buy things because I'm having a bad day or without a project in mind. I also realized that I have a lot of sweaters, socks, and hats and really need to make other things that my family can use. Hopefully my hobbies will not feel like they are a chore to use up materials, but be creative outlets that make me happy. My goal is a usable supply of materials, just enough to inspire and not too much to make me feel guilty.
Often there is a lumpy poof of extra fabric on the body, arm, or both. I often thought this was because I’m not very busty or because it was an issue with ease. However, even if I’m making the correct size for my torso, I still get these lumps on certain sweaters. I see them on other peoples’ sweaters too. So why are they there?

After looking over measurements and formulas for many different styles of sweaters, I think I may have come up with the reason. I’ll begin with two examples which don’t produce lumps and then look at one that does.

Example 1: Elizabeth Zimmermann's EPS system uses a mathematical formula to plan for customizable fit. K is the term used to express the body stitches needed, calculated by multiplying your gauge by your body circumference. The body is 100% of K, arm circumferences 35%, underarm stitches 8% of K (there is some flexibility allowed in the percents, but I’m going to use a simple version here). On a bottom-up sweater, the yoke is created when 8% of K stitches are removed from each sleeve (35-8=27%) and twice on the body for the corresponding underarms (100-8-8=84%). The sleeves are then knit onto the body with the underarm stitches on holders to be seamed later. Mathematically, the EZ yoke is 84+27+27=138% of K or 1.38K. This produces a sweater without the dreaded lumps.

Example 2: Stefanie Japel uses a top-down method that increases to the full arm and full body circumferences. Mathematically this ended up being somewhere around 166-169% of K on her sweater (100% for the body, and 33-34.5% for each sleeve). This method also produces a nice sweater, without the lumps.

So, why can two methods get great results and be so different? Why are other methods making the lumps? I think it is because of a term I like to refer to as total circumferences (T). If I were to add up EZ's and Japel's total arms and body circumferences, they both come in around 166%-170% of K or 1.66K-1.7K.

EZ’s: add the yoke percents 27+27+84 to the four sets of underarm percentages 8+8+8+8 for a total of 170% of K or 1.7 K. (If using the smaller percentages of EZ’s EPS method, you can get a T number closer to 1.66K.)

Japel’s: yokes are typically 166-169% of K or 1.66-1.69K

Although they are constructed differently and are the extreme opposites for underarm stitches cast on, they both arrive at a similar T values. I have looked at sweaters that had no underarm stitches (0% of K), a few (1-2% of K), several (3-4% of K), and many (5-8% of K) and all seemed to fit into this theory.

The Math: Now look at a top-down raglan sweater:
1. Calculate the body stitch count for the sweater=sweater circumference x gauge=K.
2. Look at the number of stitches for the yoke before dividing for the body and sleeves. Add the underarm stitches you are to add four times to this number. Why add the underarm stitches four times? Because you are casting those stitches on to make the underarms on the body of the sweater (two times) and later they will be stitches picked up for each sleeve (two times). This is T (total circumferences stitch count).
3. Divide T by K. If the number is 1.7 or below, the sweater will fit nicely at the underarms. If it is over 1.7, it will be lumpy. The closer you get to 1.8, the lumps get bigger.

Example 3: the math from a lumpy sweater top-down raglan
1. Look at your top-down raglans (or sweaters in general) and look for one with the lumps and look for one that fits well in the underarm area. Do the math described in the steps above and see if my theory works for your body shaping. I’m curious if this theory works for others or just my build. Perhaps for your shape you can wear something with a T of 1.75K better than a 1.68 with no resulting underarm issues. Or, perhaps you can go up to 1.72K will no ill effects. Feed back and comments welcome!

Conclusion: If this theory works for you, then it may be of use in the future. Before beginning a project, run through the calculations and see what kind of a T measurement you get. Does it work for your body type? If not, then make some alterations. Reduce or add underarm stitches or alter the number of stitches you need to increase to for the yoke. Hopefully the knowledge will result in better fitting sweaters.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2376289184606478428.post-13810170052491215812011-02-01T08:33:00.003-06:002011-02-01T08:45:26.352-06:00Happy 2011 (the February Edition)2010 ended with most of my goals completed. I never thought I'd make both goals honestly. I still have tons of sweater yarn and sock yarn to use, but it felt very good to make all those gifts for my family and friends. I love it that my family is enjoying wearing handmade socks. Very satisfying for a knitter.

For 2010, my goals are Knitting Everest and 10 Shawls in 2010. My KE project is to spin up all (seriously) my fiber stash and make projects from some of it (not necessarily all of it). I'm nearly done with the alpaca. I think the alpaca will become a Moderne Log Cabin blanket (Mason-Dixon pattern). I have a lot of natural wool colors, one in enough for a full sweater, maybe 2 vests/tops, or lots of colorwork. I've also updated my spinning records. I have some fiber I may destash as well. I can't buy any new fiber until this is gone.

For 10 shawls, I need to do at least two over 546 yards (500 m), with the rest over 273 yards (250 m). I'm working on the first one (Citron in Knit Picks lace).

I'm still interested in IntSweMoDo2010, but I may only try for 6 sweaters.

Ravelympics will be two projects (so far)-Sundara and ESK. I think that is all I'm going to attempt.

I'm also on a bit of a yarn diet. I'm going to try my yarn knit and not buy anything until the Knit-In in March (unless it is for a gift).

Those are the goals. After seeing the results of last year, I'm realizing that I need to set them to keep focused and stay motivated. I also like seeing the FO pictures in the Ravelry groups.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2376289184606478428.post-54822022607825823642009-10-19T14:17:00.007-05:002009-10-19T14:33:48.627-05:00Mid October UpdateSocktober has begun and I'm plugging away. I finished my February Lady Socks in Squoosh Confection. I also am participating in the Mystery Sock KAL from Through the Loops using my malabrigo sock-cordovan (US1). That is going pretty well. New clues on Thursdays, knitting both socks because I had parts of two skeins leftover from Jon's socks. I also started Jon's Plucky Merino Socks in Nessie. Boy, I love that yarn. Those are counting toward my Sock Knitters Anonymous October project. Such fun groups and very motivating. If I finish those by the end of the month, I'll be pretty satisfied.

I started my Whisper Cardigan, but it is on hold due to the socks in progress. More to come on that. Plus, it was really cold for two weeks and a lace wt. sweater seemed silly.

I did finish my next NaKniSweMoDo sweater. Love IT. It is Anise from Rowan and I used the remaining Cascade 109 in black. It is a great dressy sweater.

DONE Sweaters/big projects= 16 of 12 (#s for NaKniSweMoDo only):
1. School started (middle one in Kindergarten now!) and lots of knitting I guess.

I finished three more sweaters, a stocking, 4 hats, 2 shawls/scarves, 1 pair of mitts, and a disappointing felt tote. I love the two Gretel hats I made; one with Plucky MCN sport and the other is Madelinetosh Worsted. Yum!!! I participated in Single Skein September with the Stash and Burn Groupies, which is why there were quite a few small projects in there. So nice after all the sweaters! Two of my projects ended up in the Episode #83 photo (1st column, top and bottom pics).

Next up is October and Socktober. I have quite a few skeins of sock yarn which need to get made into something. My goals are to make at least three from this group:
-finish Squoosh "Confection" (February Lady Socks)
-Plucky "Nessie" socks for Jon
-Ruby Port Sundara (to match Henley Perfected sweater)
-Malabrigo "Cordovan" doubled
-KP Essential "Soot" for Jon
-Figure out a pattern for the Squoosh "Curry"
-Green socks for L

I also have some lace yarn to make some lightweight sweaters for next spring. I still want to make a Whisper Cardigan. I finally bought the magazine because the digital version was just not happening soon enough. More sweaters are out there, waiting to be knit. I started Anise; bulky sweaters knit up so fast!

DONE Sweaters/big projects= 15 of 12 (#s for NaKniSweMoDo only):
1. I completed my 11th, 12th, and 13th items for others, which was a huge relief! I'm going to keep track for the rest of the year, but I've made my goal and am happy! Jon's 2 Rib-a-roni hats and Jacquie's scarf wrapped it up.

In NaKniSweMoDo land, I finished my black Slinky Ribs sweater #11 out of Cascade 220 Superwash and it fits very well. The cuffs may need to be reknit because they are a little too tight. We'll see. I completed my Apres Surf Sans Hoodie #12 and love the yarn and finished sweater. It gets a bit old to make a sweater out of fingering weight yarn, but I love the results. So pretty! I wasn't able to finish it before the end of the month because we had a bit of company to prep for and entertain.

What's next? I have a few sweaters worth of yarn to knit up (more than I started with!). Plus socks, hats, and shawls are cued up and waiting. I'm hoping for some good inspiration from the fall magazine/online patterns. I tired of the same old thing. I also have 2 Christmas stockings for my littler guys to make, so that would be fun to work on as well. Four months and no obligations sounds the best of all. I started up two new projects today (fingering and lace wt).

While trying to muster up the strength to finish my sweater and waiting for it to dry before the applied i-cord bindoff, I whipped up a Gretel (Ysolda pattern) using some Madelinetosh Merino Worsted yarn in Silver Fox. It was a dream project and I love the results. What is it about me and cabled hats? Must make more....

DONE Sweaters/big projects= 12 of 12 (#s for NaKniSweMoDo only):
1. It is a styled like a traditional Danish shawl (more of a heart-shaped triangle). Those shawls use garter stitch, so I made up a variation of the Oriel lace pattern to incorporate garter stitch (Oriella). I love it! I'm having it test knit and the pattern will be up as soon as I hear back from one or more of them. Here's what it looks like:

Dane Shawl
(knit in Knit Picks Gloss-bare, US6 needles)

Now I'm testing it in Sundara Sock, US7 needles

The response has been amazing so far and I want to make sure it is error free before I put the links up on Ravelry--it will be free. My Sundara Lace KACAL sweater was delayed because of that. I'm now test knitting the pattern using a skein of Sundara Sock (Deadly Nightshade) for the KACAL. Then it is back to the sweater mines for me! I can't decide what pattern to use for the FSM or sock, so this is a good diversion.

Sweaters/big projects= 10 of 12 (#s for NaKniSweMoDo only):
1. I'm very excited to have done so many sweaters in such a short time. However, I'm more thrilled that they have been very wearable pieces and I've learned a ton about sweater shaping, construction and what styles look good on me. After a very cool spring, I've seen that my wardrobe lacked light weight sweaters, so I've made more of those. Probably one of my happiest F.O.'s has been getting the two tops done in the plum Cotton Fleece. It is frustrating to work so hard and then have a garment that looks bad or fits poorly. I love both now and am realizing that it pays to get it right.

Next up, a black wool worsted wt. version of Slinky Ribs from Custom Knits and a sock weight sweater from my Sundara Limited Edition "Second Look". It is more varigated so I'll be doing a lace pattern on that one. It will be my project for Sundara Summer Lace KACAL, which starts June 21st.

Sweaters/big projects= 10 of 12 (#s for NaKniSweMoDo only):
1. I finished my Cassidy Cardigan and love it except for the excessively long sleeves. Then, I finished my Buttercup top out of Cotton Fleece from a recycled project. I knit the original during the winter Olympics in 2002. Then ripped it out and reknit it into a wrap cardigan last spring. It was too baggy, so I used the leftovers to start Buttercup and then had to rip out some of the wrap sweater to finish. The wrap sweater was then frogged back to the underarms and is being reknit (for the second time) to become the third (or is it fourth?) version of the sweater. On the upside, this yarn holds up to lots of reknitting. I'm hoping it will be a quick FO and #9 in my quest for 12 sweaters in 2009.

#10 will be a sweater out of some lovely Plucky Knitter 50% silk/50% merino fingering weight yarn in a Peacock color. Yum. It is nice to balance out the fine yarns with thicker yarns, and vice versa. I'll probably do #11 in either my Sundara FSM in a new shade from the Limited Edition color Music of the Night or my sock yarn LE Second Look. I'll be getting some Black over Violet soon too, which may not wait its turn in the queue.

Sweaters/big projects= 9 of 12 (#s for NaKniSweMoDo only):
1. I may make another light sweater out of lace weight in the future, or convert a similar pattern to sock yarn. Now back to my Cassidy sweater which keeps getting shelved. I need to figure out the front neck w/o the hood, so I'm doing the back before the other front (two sleeves are already done). Getting distracted and a bit bored, so now I have nothing else on the needles so that I can get a bit more done on it. The cabling and shaping is just complicated enough that I need to pay attention, but not enough to really drive me forward like other projects can. Periodic breaks seem to be a good approach for this one, which is sort of how I did the Lace Henley in February/March.

Sweaters/big projects= 7 of 12 (#s for NaKniSweMoDo only):
1. I ran out of yarn on the Plucky MCN Sport sweater, but finished it with shorter sleeves. I bought a pattern -Cassidy- and love being able to follow a pattern and not rewriting it. I lost the wind in my sweater sails and decided to take a break. Nothing seemed to match up pattern/yarn wise and rather than commit to a yucky project I decided to work on a few smaller projects for me...with mixed results.

A recap: sweaters/big projects= 5 of 12, for others projects=8 of 12

Sweaters or big projects:
1. Plucky Knitter Merino Sock Nessie (Jon socks)

Smaller FO-
-I made an Ishbel scarf out of Zen Yarn Garden Serenity (MCN base) yarn. Whoa, did that yarn bleed! I am actually sending it back to resteam/set the dye.
-I also knit up an awesome hat (rinsessa-pipo) from Ulla-a Finnish knitting online mag. It is Plucky Knitter MCN Worsted. Love it dearly.
-I knit up Pointsettia from Knitty in the scraps of my Sundara FSM Ruby Port. Love that base so much!
=Three red/burgundy projects in a row! Pretty funny, but I love that color and I have a pair of mittens that needed a hat/scarf combo for years. If the scarf can get set, it will be lovely. Ishbel is a great & fun pattern.
-Made a pair of purple socks from Tess's Twinkle Toes and a Nancy Buch (Vintage Socks) pattern/Silk Socks for a 5 or 6 year old. Very pretty, but the yarn showed quite a bit of wear after the first wearing. :(

My Kiki rug is still sitting in the corner in a time out.
